Does over 50 car insurance exist or is a marketing gimmick?
Mar 2, 2015
Yes, over 50 car insurance does exist – but that shouldn’t stop you shopping around for your cover to make sure you are getting the most suitable and cost-effective deal on your motor insurance.
There are a number of companies who specialise in providing car insurance for people aged fifty plus, such as Saga, The Post Office, RIAS, and several others.
Why is 50 plus car insurance advertised as being cheaper?
Because, compared to your younger contemporaries, you are less likely to make a claim on your cover – so are less of a risk! This is because when you hit the magic age of 50, an insurer suddenly views you as being a more responsible, experienced driver who makes fewer smaller claims on their cover. This is also backed up by statistics!
This means that if you are fifty or over, you may be able to find a cost-attractive deal.
You should note, however, that once you hit your late 60’s, your premiums are likely to increase again, as statistically, you are more likely to have an accident.
So, if a car insurance product is marketed as being especially for the over 50s, will my cover be cheaper?
It may be. But also it may be not. It depends on what you are comparing the policy terms, features, benefits and cost against. You may find that you do actually source a more price-competitive product from a non-specialist insurer.
I am confused now …
Don’t be! The key when buying or renewing your motor cover is never to accept the first quote you get – even if it is from a specialist provider of insurance for the fifty plus age group.
Always shop around and get several other quotes too, so that you can satisfy yourself that you really have got the most suitable deal for you, not only in terms of costs, but also in the level of cover provided - as well as any other features that you may need (for example, legal expenses cover).
That sounds a bit time-consuming, all for the sake of saving a few pounds
Shopping around for and comparing car insurance need not be a hassle. There are a number of online services where you can get several insurance quotes from different providers, all from filling in just one form.
In fact, we have our own over 50 car insurance comparison tool that allows you to get a wide range of quotes from over 100 insurers. Some of these will offer specialist over 50 car insurance products, while others will be mainstream products.
By using a service such as this, you can get a better feel for the variants in terms of cost and the product features.
All you need to do when comparing the cover is not just look at the cost, but compare the products on a like-for-like basis. That way you should be able to source the policy that most suits your needs - and your budget!
