About Saga

Saga began life in the mid-20th century as a company specialising in holidays for the over 50s.

In the 1980s, it began to diversify and offer a range of products targeted at the same age groups (home and motor insurance plus other financial services). The diversification continued into the 1990s when they started to also offer private medical and pet insurance.

Today the brand is one of the best-known in terms of over 50s insurance and its other financial products as well as being what is now a massively expanded operation compared to its original holiday-provider origins.

At the time of writing, Saga has in excess of one million drivers using their car insurance policies.

For your peace of mind and reassurance, in the UK, Saga car insurance is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Saga car insurance options

Saga offers three policy types as options for car insurance – Comprehensive, Third Party, Fire and Theft, and Third Party only.

Third Party only car insurance from Saga typically offers:

  • damage or injury you might cause accidentally to other people's cars, person or property (as defined by the minimum insurance requirements under law);
  • protected no claims discount – covering up to two claims in a three-year period. It is included as standard providing you already have four or more years’ no claims discount entitlement, even in situations where you’ve had a “fault claim” in the last three years;
  • emergency ‘any driver’ cover – for situations where a medical emergency interferes with your journey. It means any driver can take over driving the vehicle or returning your car back home;
  • trips abroad cover – automatically provides the same cover as that applicable in the UK for you or your named spouse/partner to drive within the EU. This is for an unlimited time period. Should your journey take you outside the EU, Saga may be able to provide an international motor insurance certificate – also known as a “Green Card”.

Third Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT) cover offers all the benefits of Third Party cover plus:

  • cover for loss or damage to your own vehicle by defined fire and theft conditions;
  • unlimited audio/visual cover against fire and theft circumstances - providing the equipment is defined as being “permanently fitted” (the comprehensive policy also includes cover for accidental damage).

Fully comprehensive cover provides all the benefits of a TPFT policy plus:

  • cover for damage to your own vehicle (conditions and definitions apply);
  • uninsured driver cover – should an uninsured driver hit your car through no fault of yours, then providing you supply their vehicle registration and details of the accident, Saga will refund any excess paid and your no claims discount won't be reduced;
  • the provision of a guaranteed replacement vehicle – in situations where you have used a Saga-approved repairer following an accident in the UK. This applies while your car is being repaired or until such time as it’s declared a “total loss” (whichever is sooner);
  • glass repairs – with no effect on your no claims discount. Again, this is only if a Saga-approved repairer has been used (a standard £75 excess applies if the glass needs to be totally replaced);
  • standard personal accident cover. This applies in circumstances  where you have been seriously injured as a result of an accident involving your vehicle, irrespective of fault, where Saga will include a benefit of up to £5,000 for defined injury categories;
  • emergency accommodation / get you home cover. Saga offer up to £500 per claim for accommodation in an emergency or for travel expenses after an accident;
  • up to a maximum of £1,000 personal belongings cover. This includes things such as laptops, clothing, phones and glasses carried in your car, should they be lost or damaged due to accident, fire, theft or attempted theft. Saga increase this cover level to £2,000 during December to allow for potential Christmas presents you may be carrying;
  • two year “new for old” replacement cover. We’ll replace your car with a brand new one if it is written off - provided you have owned it from new and it is up to one year old. Cars between one and two years old with mileage up to 12,000 miles are similarly covered;
  • vandalism cover. Damage caused by vandals won’t affect your no claims discount;
  • medical expenses cover – Saga provide up to £300 for medical expenses arising following an accident involving your car;
  • child car seat cover – replacement of a child car seat with a new one following an accident involving your car.

Saga also offers products providing breakdown cover, legal cover, motor home and caravan insurance.

Over 50s Car Insurance

Saga car insurance is specifically aimed at over-50s drivers. They do, in some circumstances, permit younger drivers (e.g. family members or spouses) to be included on the policy as “named drivers”.

Saga over 50s car insurance comprehensive cover offers all the benefits listed under the Fully Comprehensive section.

Reasons why you may consider Saga car insurance

Here are some of the reasons you might wish to consider over 50s car insurance quotes from Saga when you compare car insurance:

  • an established brand specifically targeted at the over-50 driver;
  • a high level of additional benefits included as standard;
  • Defaqto 5-Start rating for the period 2013-2018 (independent assessment of the product under offer);
  • attractive pricing – comprehensive cover starts from £170 a year. 20% of Saga customers taking out a comprehensive policy between October and December 2017 and paying yearly, paid that figure or less.

Please note – the above statements may be subject to change over time.

May we please remind you that, as is typically the case with all car insurance providers, Saga car insurance policies are subject to terms, conditions and policyholder/applicant status. Some of the above points may not apply in your unique situation.

If you are seeking a car insurance review, car insurance quotations or cover information, please remember also that you must always provide full disclosure of all pertinent facts relating to your vehicle, driving licence status and any other information required by the company.
