Formed in France in 1985 (with origins going back into the 18th century), by some measures, it is one of the biggest and best-recognised insurance brands in the world.

The company has approximately 10.5 million customers in the UK and Ireland and offers a range of insurance products including property, car insurance and AXA / PPP healthcare insurance.

Its UK headquarters is in London with a separate HQ in Ireland for Republic of Ireland customers.

AXA car insurance options       

AXA car insurance offers two policy types for car insurance – comprehensive and third party fire and theft.

Available under comprehensive cover and third party, fire and theft, is protection and cover for a number of elements.

Cover typically includes:

  • damage you might cause accidentally to other people's cars or property;
  • injuries you might cause to other people accidentally with your vehicle;
  • the replacement of or repairs to, your car, should it be damaged by fire;
  • repairs to or the replacement of, your car if it is damaged by theft or stolen;
  • the replacement of your child car seats should they be damaged by theft or fire or stolen;
  • onward travel or overnight accommodation if your vehicle can’t be driven following damage caused by a risk covered by your policy;
  • courtesy car following a qualifying claim (conditions may apply);
  • repairs have a lifetime guarantee – providing they have been completed by an AXA car insurance approved garage;
  • European driving cover for up to 90 days;
  • replacement keys or locks, should your car keys be stolen;
  • around the clock 24 hour claims line support services.

Comprehensive cover includes all the benefits of TPF&T policies, plus:

  • replacement or repair of your car if it is damaged accidentally - even if this was your fault;
  • replacement of your child car seats if they are involved in an accident;
  • personal accident cover of £5,000;
  • repair or replacement of the windscreen;
  • replacement keys or locks should you lose your car keys accidentally;
  • cover for fuelling errors (putting the wrong fuel in your vehicle);
  • uninsured driver promise protecting your no-claims discount if the other driver is without cover (conditions apply).

Multi-car insurance is available and provides:

  • up to 10% discount for subsequent vehicles added to the policy.

Additional insurance options

Breakdown cover and van insurance options also exist. Van insurance options are typically aimed at personal, social and commuting use of vans. Commercial use is not covered.

Over 50s car insurance

AXA does not offer a separate policy and the provisions for the over 50s are as outlined for their standard car insurance policies.

They do say they offer attractive rates recognising the maturity and risk-reduction that typically comes with age.
