About Direct Line

Direct Line was launched in the UK in 1985.

At the time, its proposition was revolutionary, as it involved direct selling through technology (initially telephones) to the UK public rather than the norm at the time – High Street outlets.

Originally operating from a single office with around only 60 employees, today it employs over 10,000 people and has around 10 million customers in the UK. Their product portfolio has also expanded significantly and now includes home, pet, travel, breakdown, life, landlord and business insurance types of cover

Direct Line’s own statistics state that they sell an insurance policy every 10 seconds and are notified of a customer claim every 30 seconds.

For your peace of mind, Direct Line is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

Direct Line car insurance options

Third party cover is the minimum insurance required by law in the UK if you are driving a vehicle on public roads. It’s also typically required even if your vehicle is off-road unless you have gone through the formal SORN (Statutory Off-Road Notification) process with the DVLA and declared your vehicle to be in that position.

Third party would typically cover, in qualifying circumstances, damages awarded to third parties against you by a court. That minimum cover level doesn’t include protection for any damage to your car or injuries you might suffer.

Direct Line car insurance quotes add “fire and theft” cover to the third party minimum, to offer some financial protection to you in those circumstances.

The typical cover falls into areas such as:

  • fire & theft.

Financial protection for situations where your vehicle is stolen or damaged by attempted theft, plus any damage due to fire, lightning or explosion;

  •  damage to a third party.

  •  repair work.

Approved repairs are guaranteed for five years if you use a Direct Line approved repairer. Such repairers will also clean your car inside and out before it's returned;

  • in-car equipment.

The policy offers unlimited cover for fitted in-car audio, TV, telephone or navigation equipment (or up to £1,000 for non-standard equipment);

  • 24/7 emergency helpline.

A Direct Line car insurance policy is also available offering “fully comprehensive” cover. This offers the same cover as third party, fire and theft, plus:

  • used car replacement.

There are three options available here, should the car be written off due to an accident, fire, flood or vandalism, (conditions apply). A replacement car on a like-for-like basis, a cash settlement or an upgrade replacement where policyholders can pay the difference for a more expensive replacement;

  • medical expenses.

Medical expenses for each person injured following an accident, providing there's no other cover in force under another car insurance policy. This has a £100 per person limit;

  • uninsured driver promise.

Direct Line will repay the excess if the policyholder’s car is damaged in an accident involving an uninsured driver. Once they have confirmed that the accident was the fault of the uninsured driver (conditions apply), they will also restore any no claims discounts.

The registration number, make and model of the other car is needed to make a claim;

  • personal belongings cover.

Cover in place for up to £250 for any loss or damage to clothing and personal belongings in the event of a fire, theft or accident situation;

  • windscreen damage.

This covers the cost of the repair or replacement of a broken windscreen, sunroof or window. Applies only to Direct Line car insurance approved repairers. There’s an excess of £10 for a repair or £75 for a replacement;

  • new car cover.

If your car has been stolen or written off, Direct Line will replace it with a new one of the same make and model. This applies if your vehicle is less than a year old and you're the first (and only) registered owner.

This provides the opportunity to obtain significant discounts on your premiums when you’re multiple vehicles;

Direct Line car insurance quotations are also available for the following road-use related policies or car insurance optional extras:

  • “DrivePlus Black Box” insurance;

This uses a simply installed device and telematics to monitor driving performance and offers discounts both for the initial installation and subsequent safe driving behaviours. Direct Line this as being suitable for younger (under-25 years) drivers.

  • breakdown cover;
  • no claim discount protection;
  • motor legal protection;

This would cover specified legal fees should you become involved in claims-related legal proceedings.

  • guaranteed Hire Car Plus;

Provides temporary replacement vehicles while your vehicle is unavailable (within specified parameters and circumstances);

  • commercial van insurance;
  • Select Premier;

This is an integrated policy covering cars, property and possessions. It’s stated to be aimed at cars valued at over £100,000.
