About General & Medical health insurance
General & Medical were formed in the 1980s. They originally offered services to the medical professional but over time have evolved into a group providing many types of cover including health insurance to the individual and business sectors.
They are headquartered in Peterborough.

The Essentials plan
Essentials and Essentials Plus are designed for individuals and families wanting affordable healthcare on a budget. The plan includes consultation and diagnostic testing that relates to conditions that require in-patient admission; the use of private hospitals for surgery for acute conditions and has an annual maximum benefit level of £50,000 per person.
The Essentials Plus plan
Like the Essentials healthcare plan but also includes cancer and palliative care treatments, hospice care and a more inclusive range of in-patient benefits.
The Everyday plan
Still for the budget conscious but more comprehensive than the Essentials Plan. This private health insurance policy also includes cancer treatment cover that increases over a five-year period if you don’t make a claim. In addition, there’s out-patient cover for therapies, complimentary medicine and cardiovascular conditions as well as cash benefits and critical illness.
The Everyday Plus plan
By upgrading to the Everyday Plus Plan from General & Medical, you receive higher levels of outpatient benefit and cancer treatment in addition to in-patient cover for cardiovascular conditions.
The Lifestyle plan
A more comprehensive health care plan, Lifestyle provides the highest level of cover for inpatient admissions, enhanced cancer care and out-patient benefits. It also includes cash benefits, critical illness and access to a 24 hour a day GP helpline.
The Lifestyle Plus plan
Lifestyle Plus also gives you cover for a private ambulance, home nursing and cash benefits for personal accident and temporary disablement.
In addition, Lifestyle Plus includes medical and transportation costs back to the UK for urgent medical attention if you are ill or injured overseas.
The Elite plan
The Elite Plan is General & Medical’s most comprehensive level of private medical insurance which also includes dentistry, optical care, private GP visits, maternity benefits and costs for boarding pets.

Do you have any existing medical conditions?
General & Medical use various forms of underwriting including Moratorium – meaning that your pre-existing conditions typically won’t be covered for a period of up to five years.
For an additional premium, General & Medical provides cover for certain pre-existing medical conditions allowing you to select two pre-defined conditions from their list. You receive an initial cover limit of up to £1,000 in the first year for the conditions, which increases annually to a maximum of £10,000 over 10 years if you have continuous cover and don’t claim.
