This review will focus on Dignity, a market leading prepaid funeral plan provider who launched the first funeral plan in 1985.

In addition to providing funeral plans, Dignity also own their own funeral directors throughout the country and are the largest single operator of crematoriums; so a well established company, although plans can be used at any crematorium not just those owned by Dignity.

What prepaid funeral plans does Dignity offer?

Which services do Dignity funeral plans guarantee?

The all important part of this Dignity funeral review that helps you understand if there will be anything left for the family to pay:

Guaranteed Services

All Dignity funeral plans guarantee to cover the funeral director’s services detailed in the plan. This means there will be nothing further to pay for those services when the time comes. Services include arranging and conducting the funeral, care of the deceased, use of the chapel of rest, a coffin, hearse and depending on the plan chosen, a limousine for family.

Dignity funeral plans also guarantee the cremation fees and minister’s fees, which means your family will have nothing more to pay for thee services when the time comes.

Service Not Guaranteed

For a cremation funeral all the services included in the plan are fully guaranteed.

If you prefer the burial option then a Dignity funeral plan includes one of the largest allowances of £1,200 that increases in line with RPI.

Although not a guarantee, this allowance can be used in its entirety for any funeral costs such as help with the cost of a plot, burial fees, the reception or funeral flowers. And if there is any money left over, it is paid back to the family or estate. Some other funeral plans restrict the use of the allowance just to the actual burial or interment fees and if you don’t use it all, you lose it

Will there be more for my family to pay?

All the cremation services included in a Dignity funeral plan are guaranteed with nothing more to pay however the plan doesn’t include a second doctors certificate if required. Although this is currently required everywhere in the UK apart from Scotland, a proposed change in the law means this may not be relevant in the future. As Dignity didn’t want customers paying for a service they won’t need in the future, they removed this element from their funeral plans.

If you choose the burial option there could be more to pay if the costs exceed the £1,220 allowance (or whatever it has grown to) included in the funeral plan.

How can I be sure my money is safe in a Dignity funeral plan?

Another important part of this funeral plan review is to note that Dignity is registered and regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA) and therefore abides by their strict rules and code of conduct.

When you buy a Dignity funeral plan, your money is held in the National Funeral Trust which is a completely separate entity to Dignity. So if anything were to happen to the company, the trust fund with your money in it would remain intact ready to pay for your funeral services.

In addition to annual independent audits and actuarial reviews, Dignity also produces a report every year of its findings, so everything is transparent.

How can I pay for my Dignity funeral plan?

With a Single Payment

The cheapest way to buy a Dignity funeral plan is either to pay in one go, or spread your costs over 12 months - you won’t incur any additional fees.

Monthly Instalments

If you prefer to spread your payments over a longer period, Dignity offer instalments between 1 and 10 years depending on age, with no deposit.

On monthly funeral plans longer than 12 months, Dignity also promise that if you die before completing your instalments, the funeral services detailed in your plan will be provided with no charge to your family. You just need to have had the plan in place for 12 months and be up to date with your payments.

Payments should be complete by the age of 85 and you have the flexibility to pay more into the plan at any time, or pay the balance off early.

Can I choose a burial or cremation funeral?

Yes, you can choose either a cremation or burial funeral when you apply for a Dignity funeral plan. Alternatively you can state that you are ‘undecided’ and choose your preferred option at a later date or leave it to the family to decide.

Can I cancel my Dignity plan?

When you apply for a Dignity funeral plan you have a 30 day free cancellation period giving you time to review all of the details and cancel the plan and receive a full refund, if you're not entirely happy.

If you cancel your funeral plan after this period you will receive a refund of the money paid, minus a cancellation fee of £395.

Who will my funeral director be?

Dignity own a nationwide network of funeral directors, and work with many more, carefully selected to carry out the funerals of their Planholders. Dignity will allocate a funeral director who is closest to your home address. However, if you have a specific funeral director in mind, and they are already contracted to accept Dignity funeral plans, Dignity can allocate this funeral director to your plan.

(Please note that with the limited plan, the funeral director has to be one owned by Dignity.)

What happens to my funeral plan if I move home?

If you move home your Dignity funeral plan moves with you at no extra cost. They will allocate a new nominated funeral director to your plan.

Do Dignity prepaid funeral plans offer additional features?

There are two main features of Dignity funeral plans.

  1. Dignity fully guarantees the cremation fees and minister’s fees
  2. The allowance included in the burial option can be used for any aspect of the funeral, including help buying the burial plot. Plus any money left over from the allowance is paid back to the family or estate.

Our Dignity funeral plans review verdict

Dignity funeral plans guarantee all of the services included for a cremation funeral. Third party costs for burial fees aren’t guaranteed but the allowance included in the plan is one of the largest and comes with complete flexibility – meaning that it can even be used to help pay for the burial plot. What’s more if the allowance isn’t fully used, any remaining funds are either paid back to the estate or to the family.

The Dignity Promise means that customers with payment plans longer than 12 months will not have the worry of dying before they have completed the instalments because the services as detailed in the plan will be provided without family having to pay any outstanding balance.

Doctor’s fees aren’t included in any of the plans so if required, these will need to be paid for when the time comes.
