Who is Memoria?

Established in 2003 by a 4th generation funeral director with our 50 years experience, Memoria provides funeral services throughout the UK via their Crematoria and Memorial Parks.

In addition to offering direct funeral services, Memoria also offer traditional funerals and a wide range of memorial options throughout their parks.

What direct cremations plans do they offer?

In addition to their ‘at need’ traditional and direct funeral services, Memoria offer 4 prepaid funeral plans. For the purposes of this direct cremation review we will concentrate on the ‘Memoria Simple Prepaid Plan’ which is the only plan that offers a cremation without a funeral service:

The Memoria Simple Prepaid Plan – as mentioned this plan provides a simple cremation without a funeral service, so no one in attendance.

It includes collection of the deceased from a hospital or mortuary anywhere across England and Wales, a standard coffin, cremation fees and doctor’s fees if still applicable and the ashes either scattered or available to be picked up.

Will there be more for my family to pay when the time comes?

The information on the Memoria website does state that there are no hidden costs and that everything required for a simple funeral without a service is covered however if you die at home or in a nursing home; basically anywhere without a mortuary then there will be more to pay.

As this fee varies depending on location, it has to be paid at the time of need however currently you should expect to pay an additional £240.

How can I be sure my money is safe?

When you pay for your Memoria direct cremation plan your money is held in a life insurance policy administered by Ecclesiastical Planning Services who are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. This in turn means that you are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme.

Payment Options

With a Single Payment

The cheapest way to buy a the Memoria direct cremation plan is either in one go at £1,675 or over 12 months as you don’t incur any additional fees. Be aware that with the 12 month instalment option, you do need to cover the Memoria admin fee of £480 straight away, so your first month payment would be £579.58.

Monthly Instalments

If you prefer to spread the cost of your Memoria direct funeral plan over a longer period then instalment options are available over 2, 3, 4 and 5 years. You do pay more for the flexibility of paying over a longer period and also as previously mentioned, you have to cover the cost of the admin fee in the first month too. Therefore regardless of which instalment option you choose, your first month’s payment will exceed £500.

Can I cancel the plan?

When you buy a Memoria direct funeral plan you automatically have a 30 day review period to ensure you are completely happy. If you do change your mind and cancel your plan during this period you will receive a full refund.

If you cancel the plan after this 30 day period, you receive the money you have paid into the plan minus the admin fee of £480. This is by far the highest cancellation fee of any of the direct cremation plans reviewed.

What happens if I move address?

If you move anywhere throughout England and Wales your simple direct cremation plan will move with you at no extra charge. Just let Memoria know your new address and they will update your records accordingly.

Our Memoria Direct Cremation review verdict

The fact that Memoria have their own crematoriums means that they have much greater control over their costs which is a good thing. They also take care of the actual cremations themselves which is reassuring from a quality and control perspective but can use external sources in certain areas such as the collections.

It’s disappointing that their documentation is a little misleading in that it stresses there are no hidden costs yet collection from home is not included as part of the plan. As a higher percentage of people do die either at home or in a care home rather than somewhere that provides mortuary facilities, this means that potentially a large number of families could need to pay this additional charge when the time comes.
