Sainsbury’s Over 50 Life Insurance Review

  • Sainsbury’s over 50s life insurance is provided by Legal & General, one of the UK’s largest and most established insurers. This means that while you apply through Sainsbury’s Money, the policy itself is underwritten, managed and paid out by Legal & General, which is responsible for the cover and any claims.

At the time of writing, eligible customers who buy a new policy directly through Sainsbury’s Money can receive 22,000 Nectar points, worth at least £110. The points are awarded within 60 days of paying five months’ premiums, subject to the offer’s qualifying conditions.

Sainsbury’s Bank’s core banking customers migrated to NatWest in November 2025. Life insurance is now marketed through Sainsbury’s Money.

What is Sainsbury's Over 50s Life Insurance?

Sainsbury’s Money over 50s life insurance is a whole-of-life policy designed to pay out a cash sum when you die, helping your family cover costs such as funeral expenses or other financial needs.

The policy offers guaranteed acceptance for UK residents aged 50 to 80, with no medical questions required. In return for monthly payments, your loved ones receive a lump sum when you pass away.

How it works

Sainsbury’s over 50s life insurance works by paying a cash sum when you die, in return for monthly premium payments.

  • You choose a monthly premium based on what you can afford. Your quote shows the cash sum available for your budget, based on your age and smoking status.

  • You are guaranteed to be accepted. You must meet the age and UK residency requirements. There are no medical questions.

  • Cover lasts for the rest of your life. Full cover starts after one year, with qualifying accidental death covered during the first year. You must keep paying the required premiums to maintain cover.

  • Premiums stop after your 90th birthday. You remain covered and your policy continues until you die.

  • The payout can be used for any purpose. It may help with funeral expenses or other costs, or be left as a gift. It is not guaranteed to cover the full cost of a funeral.

The amount you pay and how your payout changes over time depend on whether you choose the Fixed or Increasing Plan.

Fixed vs Increasing Plans – What's the Difference?

Sainsbury’s Money offers two types of over 50s life insurance: a Fixed Plan and an Increasing Plan. The main difference is whether your premiums and payout stay the same or increase over time.

The Fixed Plan keeps your premiums and payout the same, but inflation reduces the payout’s buying power.

The Increasing Plan reviews your payout annually against the Retail Prices Index (RPI). The following applies:

  • Premiums rise by 1.5 times the RPI percentage increase, so consider whether future payments will remain affordable. RPI may not keep pace with funeral costs.

  • If RPI exceeds 10%, increases are capped at 10% for your payout and 15% for premiums. Neither changes if RPI is zero or negative.

  • You can decline an annual increase. Your premiums and payout then stay fixed, with no future increases available. Inflation may reduce the payout’s buying power.

What this means in practice

The Fixed Plan offers certainty. Your monthly payments stay the same, and your payout is fixed. However, inflation will reduce its value over time.

The Increasing Plan is designed to protect against inflation, with your payout rising each year. This comes at the cost of increasing premiums, which may become less affordable later in life.

How much does it cost?

Sainsbury’s over 50s life insurance starts from around £5 per month, depending on your age, smoking status and the level of cover you choose.

As with all over 50s life insurance, the total cost is difficult to predict in advance, as the policy lasts for life.

Depending on how long you live, you may pay more in premiums than the amount paid out.

A note on over 50s life insurance

Consumer experts, including MoneySavingExpert, often caution that over 50s life insurance can be expensive for the level of cover provided.

Because you may pay premiums for many years, the total paid could exceed the payout, even though payments stop after your 90th birthday.

Your health and life expectancy are therefore important factors to consider. Those in good health who expect to live longer may end up paying significantly more into the plan than it pays out, while those with shorter life expectancy may receive better value.

The longer you pay premiums before your 90th birthday, the greater your total payments will be.

These plans are best understood as a simple way to leave a small, guaranteed lump sum, rather than a cost-effective way to cover larger expenses such as a full funeral.

  • No medical questions

  • Fixed or increasing payout options

  • Lifetime cover

  • Premiums stop at age 90

  • Access to Legal & General Wellbeing Support Services

  • Access to Care Concierge

  • Qualifying accidental death in the first year pays the full cash amount, subject to policy conditions.

  • Increasing Plan premiums can rise each year (linked to inflation)

  • Premium increases may outpace inflation over time

  • Inflation may still erode the value of the payout

  • The £10,000 limit applies to the combined cash sums across your Sainsbury’s and other Legal & General over 50s policies, not to each policy separately.

Wellbeing Support and Care Concierge

Alongside life cover, Sainsbury's over 50s life insurance policy includes two services that provide practical advice and emotional support.

Sainsbury’s Wellbeing Support

Legal & General Wellbeing Support Services are provided by RedArc Assured Limited. You can speak to a qualified nurse for practical advice and emotional support. Help is available for you, your partner and children living at home.

Support includes:

  • Bereavement support following the loss of someone close

  • Mental health support, with counselling or therapy where appropriate

  • Eldercare advice and support for people caring for a loved one

  • Help arranging a second medical opinion following a diagnosis or proposed treatment

Additional help options are available to suit your individual needs and the nurse’s assessment.

Sainsbury’s Care Concierge

Care Concierge is a separate, confidential telephone advisory service from Legal & General. Its care experts help you or loved ones understand adult and later-life care options, including finding care and exploring how to fund it.

Both services are available from day one at no extra cost. You do not need to make an insurance claim to use them. Care Concierge offers guidance rather than providing care or paying care fees.

Customer reviews

Customer reviews for Sainsbury’s Money are available on platforms such as Trustpilot, although these cover a wide range of financial products rather than over 50s life insurance specifically.

Similarly, Legal & General reviews relate to a broad mix of insurance products.

As a result, it can be difficult to isolate customer feedback on this specific policy alone.

Defaqto rating

Sainsbury’s over 50s life insurance has received a 5 Star Defaqto rating, reflecting a strong level of features and benefits compared to similar products.

Defaqto ratings assess product features rather than overall value for money or long-term cost.

✔ Simple to understand and apply for

✔ Backed by Legal & General

✔ Option to protect payout against inflation

✔ Premiums stop at age 90

✔ Wellbeing Support and Care Concierge

Cons

How it compares

Sainsbury’s over 50s life insurance offers a straightforward way to leave a small cash sum, with guaranteed acceptance.

It is easy to apply for, but is less suitable for those seeking a guaranteed way to cover the full costs of a funeral.

Compare Sainsbury’s with the SunLife over 50 plan and the options covered in our Aviva life insurance review.

Look at the cash sum offered for the same monthly budget, the waiting period and when premiums stop. Check any support services too. If considering a policy that asks medical questions, compare its eligibility and duration carefully with Sainsbury’s guaranteed-acceptance whole-of-life cover.

Verdict

Sainsbury’s over 50s life insurance is a simple, accessible product backed by Legal & General, a well-established insurer and supported by a strong Defaqto rating.

Its main strengths are ease of access, guaranteed acceptance and clear structure. However, the trade-off is uncertainty. Although premiums stop after your 90th birthday, the total paid can still exceed the eventual payout, especially for those in good health.

For those prioritising simplicity and peace of mind, it can be a useful option.

For those in good health focused on value or certainty of covering specific costs, it is important to compare alternatives carefully.
