Over50choices – the one stop shop for over 50s finance

I know they say that time flies but I’m amazed that Over50choices is already celebrating its 5th year in business – and what a 5 years it has been. This is the point where you may expect me wax lyrical about the highs and lows of running a new business but in truth, the majority of the time, it really has been mainly ‘highs’.

Having had my life changing brush with cancer, I wanted to create a website that helped the over 50s and their families plan for later life. An honest, jargon free, informative place people could go for genuine reviews, guides and comparisons.

I’m pleased to say that 5 years down the line, having been featured in the Financial Times, Telegraph, Daily Mail and heralded as the good guys in the recent Fairer Finance review on prepaid funeral plans, I think Over50choices might just have done that.

There have been more than a few changes over that time, what with new partners, new products to compare and a whole new retirement and pension section; not forgetting of course our sparkly new website facelift. There’ll be no resting on our laurels for us!

So if you missed the blur of the Over50choices’ last five years, here’s our journey so far:

Prepaid Funeral Plans

Having worked with many of the leading funeral plan providers such as Golden Charter, Golden Leaves, Avalon, Choice funeral plans and Perfect Choice to name but a few, two years ago we took the decision to only recommend one company’s services; namely Dignity funeral plans.

Having kept a watchful eye on the funeral market, it became clear to see that when buying a funeral plan, customers assumed often incorrectly that all of their essential funeral services were guaranteed, with nothing more to pay; a view that was supported some time later by the Fairer Finance report.

So our decision to only recommend Dignity was actually a very easy one, as Dignity are one of only two companies in the UK that actually guarantee all of the services included in the plan, with no nasty surprises for the family when the time comes. And of course, needless to say, Dignity is also registered and regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority (FPA), so you can be sure that all the safeguards are in place.

Direct Cremation Funeral Plans

A more recent addition to Over50choices, direct cremation or direct funerals as they are also known is a relatively new option for funeral planning. Instead of the traditional sombre gathering at the church or crematorium, this simple, cheap and fuss free option consists of a cremation without a funeral service, so no family or friends in attendance.

Although it’s fair to say a number of people are drawn to this low cost funeral option because it is cheap, at half the price of a traditional funeral plan, the majority choose direct cremation because they hate the thought of a funeral service and would rather give their family the freedom to ‘say goodbye’ in a more relaxed environment, be it a drink in the local pub or a family get together.

Whilst it’s true that direct cremation may not be right for everyone, we welcomed the choice it offers those families looking for alternative funeral arrangements, so we’re very pleased to add it to the Over50choices website.

Having taken time to compare the market for direct funeral plans, we were also very happy to recommend Pure Cremation as our number one for this type of cremation only funeral plan. FPA registered Pure Cremation is the only company that is completely dedicated to direct funerals and fully guarantee all of the services included with no hidden extras, so a perfect fit for Over50choices.

Equity Release

The demand for Equity Release has increased over recent years, as it is fast becoming a part of many UK households’ financial planning; especially those approaching or in retirement.

These lifetime mortgages provide a way of unlocking the equity tied up in your home, releasing a tax free cash sum that can be used how you want; perhaps for home or garden improvements, funding retirement or helping family members get on the property ladder.

Having reviewed and compared equity release providers, we are now celebrating our first anniversary with Age Partnership, the equity release specialist we selected as our partner.

Award winning Age Partnership, compare equity release schemes across the whole of the market and have agreed preferential rates on lifetime mortgages with providers that you may not be able to get elsewhere; again a perfect fit with the Over50choices ethos.

And of course all of their lifetime mortgages are regulated by the Financial Services Authority and come with the seal of approval from the Equity Release Council; so you are completely covered by the all important ‘no negative equity guarantee’.

Private Health Insurance

In addition to improving our private health insurance reviews, guides and information, 2018 also saw us welcome Hannah on to our panel of approved specialists. As Financial Conduct Authority approved insurance specialists, with access to the whole of the market including all the main insurance protection and health providers, they are in a perfect position to offer advice on the best private medical insurance plans.

And finally

So as you can see, the last few years have been pretty busy and this is just the tip of the iceberg; our work doesn’t stop here. Updates to our Over50choices website are ongoing as we strive to provide the latest on over 50s finance, including forthcoming updates to our car insurance and home insurance pages, as well as a brand new mortgage section.

So to everyone who has supported us over the last 5 years, a great big thank you and here’s to the next chapter of the Over50choices journey.
