Don’t worry, I haven’t finally lost the plot or gone mad. When it comes to looking after your health, making a health insurance comparison and putting plans in place can be key to getting the immediate medical support you need to get you back on your feet in super quick time; but according to research, gardening can also have a massive impact on both your physical and mental health.

Studies have found that the bacteria found in soil can trigger the release of serotonin which can in turn make you feel brighter and less anxious.

It’s a good form of exercise

Although considered light exercise, we tend to garden for longer periods so can actually burn off more calories than we would in a gym. Obviously it would depend on the activity but just a simple spot of weeding could burn between 200 to 400 calories an hour.

It improves mental health 

In addition to promoting physical health care, the mental health charity Mind say that tending the garden gives a sense of fulfilment which in turn helps promote self-esteem and decrease levels of anxiety.

It helps your 5 a day

Growing your own fruit and vegetables makes you more aware of the food you eat, leading to an improved and healthier diet. A survey conducted in Barcelona at the Centre for Research and Environmental Epideiology  found that children in 12 schools who were encouraged to grow their own food actually also increased their intake of fruit and vegetables.

It makes you more productive

A doctor at Exeter University found that filling a work place with indoor plants meant employees were 15% more productive. Not only was the environment more pleasant, the tending of plants also made the employees feel more engaged with their surroundings.   

It supports a healthier society

All is not lost for those without a green space as allotments are reported to enhance the well being of communities and reduce sickness in society. And as for city dwellers, community gardens not only promote the use of fresh organic food but also help to build the community spirit.

So you see, protecting your health isn’t just about comparing health insurance and choosing the right private medical care; it’s also about adopting a healthier lifestyle and a spot of gardening really can lead to a healthy body and a healthy mind
