Who has the Best Energy Deals? main image

So you have read that shopping around for the best energy deal will save you money, but can you really be bothered and where do you start on your quest to find the best energy deals?

Firstly, let me tell you that switching energy suppliers will take you no longer than 10 minutes and yes it will save you money, potentially hundreds of pounds every year and depending on the energy deal you sign up to, it's worth reinvesting your time at the end of each contract period. Now is a good time to look for the best energy deals as wholesale prices have dropped dramatically since 2014.

Where do you start?

You can either go direct to an energy supplier or you can visit a comparison site that will help you compare the best energy deals on the market. The main suppliers are; npower, British Gas, E.ON, EDF, Scottish Power and SSE, however, the newer smaller players often have better deals; OVO Energy, Avro Energy, Spark, Green Star Energy, GB Energy and others.

The only preparation you need is to get your last few energy bills too hand, both gas and electricity or of course dual energy which tend to offer you a better deal. Once you have decided you will need your bank details to set up your new account, but that's it. From here on in the new provider will take care of everything with your current provider.

What's on offer?

You can opt for a variable energy tariff or a fixed tariff, the latter will give you peace of mind that should prices increase in the future that you will be protected, but the flip side is of course that you will miss out on the benefits of any price reductions.

Price shouldn't be your only consideration, knowing that you will get a good level of service should be on your list, so check out how they score before buying; some of the worst performing companies in recent years have been npower, Scottish Power and EDF.

According to the Energy Ombudsman, in 2015  complaints had risen by 500% since 2012, which is a scary increase, although only 9% of all complaints were due to switching energy suppliers. You should also look at any "exit fees" should you wish to move energy provider in the future.

Ready to switch energy supplier

This brief introduction to finding the best energy deal might seem a little light, but really that's all there is to it! If like many you have switched your car and home insurance online using a comparison site, but have always put off switching your energy supplier, now could be the time to save more money by comparing the best energy deals.
