Is Private Health Insurance Affordable?
Jun 17, 2014
Not many of us wake up and think I know, I must buy some health insurance today; after all why would you, unless someone close to you has reaped the benefits, such as seeing a specialist quickly or being treatment in a private hospital ?
Private health insurance is seen by many as a luxury; an additional monthly expense that you could do without. At the end of the day the NHS will provide cover, won’t it?
Well yes the NHS do offer a great free service but one that comes with a price. Speed and flexibility.
Affordable health insurance is not a phrase that naturally comes to mind but with the various options available today, the cost of health cover may very well surprise you. It’s funny isn’t it that when you think of all the other types of insurance policies you can have, health insurance isn’t higher up the list of must haves, given that it could actually help to save your life and improve your quality of living, no matter how old you are.
Most of us take our good health for granted; after all really bad illnesses only happen to other people don’t they? Those of you who have read my blogs will know that I became one of those ‘other people’ in 2010 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer; would you believe the first time in my 48 years that I had ever been really ill.
Fortunately I had private health care with my employment so was able to see first hand how you can benefit from the ‘speed and flexibility’ private health insurance provides; so much so that since leaving corporate life I have decided to continue the cover.
I saw all the relevant specialists I needed to make a decision on treatment very quickly and was able to choose the consultant who carried out my operation based on his wealth of experience. I did have to travel some 80 miles to be treated but that was a small price to pay to be in the care of such a renowned expert.
I am not saying that the NHS wouldn’t have done the same job locally, but given the choice and the consequences of choosing someone who was perhaps not quite as experienced in such a delicate operation, wouldn’t you opt for the best?
Of course you need to be certain you can afford the monthly payments but as you never know what is around that corner, it may be worth comparing health insurance quotes to see exactly what you could get for your budget.
There are plenty of online comparison sites that make comparing health insurance costs and levels of cover easy, with many offering additional help, support and advice over the phone; they may actually save you more money and get a better level of cover for you that is more tailored to your personal requirements too.

Affordable health insurance does exist, it’s just a matter of looking at your options and working out what is most important to you.
