The launch of this year’s Movember got me thinking about the whirlwind that has been the last 4 years. The catalyst for change was being diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2009; hence my full support and admiration for the Movember movement. For those of you who haven’t heard of it, Movember is an annual event held in November (get it!) when men come together and grow moustaches with the objective of raising awareness and support for prostate cancer and other male cancers. In my experience there is also a certain amount of bravado and leg pulling about who can grow the biggest and the best Moustache or Mo as they have been nick named. Sad isn’t it that as grown men, we still can’t help believing that the ability to grow the thickest, darkest, bushiest Mo is somehow related to our Masculinity. Will we ever grow up I hear you women say?

I have a burning question; is having an allotment cool these days or just a sign that I am getting old?

I didn’t realise living in Cornwall would be so exciting and so unusual all rolled into one. We have managed to cram as much as possible into the last week or so; juggling work and unpacking whilst trying to make the most of our new scenery and the last few days of summer sunshine (yes I’m afraid it is getting to that time of year!).

Well the rain continued to fall on not so sunny Cornwall towards the end of last week but I’m pleased to say that Sunday was lovely and we spent the day out and about visiting the delights North Cornwall has to offer, including a cream team! I don’t think I will ever tire of being able to walk on the beach whenever I want, work permitting of course. It amazes me the number of people that take little things like this for granted. In fact I bet there’s a high percentage of people throughout the UK who live by the sea and never even set foot on the beach

So here I am in sunny Cornwall at the start of my exciting new life. The reality is that it’s raining and pretty dark outside, which is disappointing considering its 10 o’clock in the morning. In fact it hasn’t stopped raining for 2 days! It’s strange isn’t it that my childhood memories of Cornwall from family holidays are of blisteringly hot days and pure blue skies. Did I imagine it or has global warming really had an effect on our weather?

I’d like to say I’ve had a lovely relaxing weekend but in truth it’s been a bit rubbish. I shouldn’t moan really as I am preparing for the next phase of ‘living the dream’; my move to Cornwall, but the reality at present is far from ‘dreamy’! It’s packing, cleaning, removing curtain poles, sorting the garage out (I found things in there I never even knew I had!).

Whilst Chris Froome was completing his race to glory this weekend, I spent Sunday trailing behind the 900 cyclists who entered the Great Weston Ride, one of which was my very red faced but determined sister-in-law Emma. The bike ride, a 56 mile trek from Bristol, through the Mendips to Weston-Super-Mare was challenging to say the least; especially given the 29 degree heat but there were some spectacular views along the way. This is the fourth year of the Great Weston Ride, a charity event which raises awareness and money for Prostate Cancer UK, a charity very close to my heart. With very little training under her belt, the family were really concerned about Emma’s welfare (she’d be the first to admit she was not perhaps as focused as she should have been on the lead up to the ride).

With the forecasters predicting another scorcher last Friday, we headed down to Cornwall for the weekend

What an amazing weekend. Amazing weather (I’m not moaning but would it be the really British thing to say it’s perhaps a tad too hot!); amazing tennis (well done Andy
